Football

Iona Football Club is a community football club based at St Columba Anglican School and is open to all members of the community.

Formed in 2017 and entering the Football Mid North Coast Competition the following year, the 2023 sees Iona Football Club enter its sixth (6th) season with teams ranging in age from U6 to U18 and Men’s First grade. Following the success of our First Grade Men’s entry into the FMNC Opens competition in 2022 where we were semi finalists we are hoping to see continued growth in our senior ranks and are active seeking women who are interested in forming our inaugural Women’s team.

In 2022 our Men’s First Grade side entered the Australia Cup to play our first ever competitive match, winning our first round match against the Nambucca Strikers before bowing out in the next round to Coffs United.

Iona Football Club prides itself on providing a professional, friendly, encouraging learning environment particularly suited to helping junior players reach their full potential as footballers.

Since our inception, Iona Football has experienced phenomenal growth almost doubling in size and growing by an average 16% per season for the last 6 seasons. From 237 registrations in 2018 to a record high 473 registrations in 2023 making us the 3rd largest football club in the Mid North Coast zone – out of 31 clubs.

Within the next few years we are projected to grow to more than 500 players.

Since we began in 2017 our female participation rates have ranged between 25 & 30% of player registrations. For the 2023 season we have 122 registered females which is 32% of our 2023 total registrations.

Females are actively involved in all aspects of Iona FC from the Committee, through to the coaches, game leaders and players. For the 2023 season we will be entering 10 teams in female only competitions, in every age group from U6 through to U14.

We are very proud of the accomplishments of our competitive teams. In the 2022 season we competed in the Semi Final series in every age group we entered, U12s, U12 Girls, U13, U14, U15 (playing in the U16 grade), U16 (playing in the U18 Grade) and the Iona men. We were Grand Finalists in the U12, U12 Girls, U14, U15/16 & U18, achieving success in the U12 boys where Iona Roar completed an undefeated season.

Whilst growth brings challenges, we remain committed to continuing the high standards of on-field performance and off-field behavior that have been established during our short history.

In the 2023 season Iona FC will enter teams in the following;

  1. Miniroos – non-competitive form of football which is suitable for players of all ages and abilities U6, U7, U8, U9, U10, U11
  2. All girls teams in the U6, U7, U8, U9, U10, U11, U12 & U14
  3. FMNC competitive age groups U12, U12 Girls, U13, U13 Girls U14, U14 Girls, U15/16 & U18.
  4. FMNC Northern League Men’s competition

Players born in 2018 who turn 5 years of age in 2023 are eligible to register to play in the U6 competition.

U12, U13 & U14 teams play on the “back oval” (Field 7) of St Columba Anglican school. Access to this field is via the main entrance off Major Innes road.
